One of the best parts of beginning a new year is setting some new goals and what you want to achieve. I’ve learned that goal setting is a fun way to check things off your list and setting realistic expectations for yourself. Goals are easy to put in your head, but writing them down on paper is more worthwhile. Place your goals somewhere you can see every day so you can work towards one of them each and every day. It’s also important to have goals that vary — mix it up, look towards fitness, health and wellness, career, fun, family, etc. Throughout the year look to this list to guide you and see what you can accomplish. It’s the best feeling to check off items as you go and then at the end of the year you’ll see truly everything you did. Don’t be sad if you do not hit all your goals; I always carry some over from the previous year!

Goals 2021:

  1. Achieve 2021 miles of physical activity

Whether it’s running, biking, hiking, walking, etc. getting physical activity helps me feel ready for the day or very accomplished after doing it. This is roughly 5.5 miles a day. It will be a tough one to achieve but totally doable!

2. Buy a house and adopt a dog!

This one has been on my goals list since 2018, but this is the year I’m going to make this happen. I’m ready to be a homeowner and have a dog!

3. Work out to feel good, not to be thinner → drink more water and stretch every day

This builds into my physical activity goal, but this goal is to look more at weights and building a better core. I want to feel good and not just look at a number on a scale. A huge piece of working out that I haven’t been doing a good job of is drinking more water a day and stretching. With stress fractures and tight hamstrings after running this is a must.

4. Eat Healthier: cook more, meal prep, and try not to snack as much

I’ve been learning more about my InstantPot and making fun recipes so this will definitely be a huge piece of this goal for 2021. Working from home was a new experience in 2020 so meal prep is something I want to continue doing. Creating healthy snacks for my work week is definitely a huge goal for 2021!

5. Get back to hiking → Focus on Olympic Peninsula/North Cascades/Rainier (can only do new hikes)

Over the last two years I’ve done over 50 hikes across WA and they’ve all been amazing, but have been concentrated across the I-90 corridor. This year I really want to get out to the Olympic Peninsula →Hurricane Ridge, Mt Townsend, Mt Elinor, Mt Storm King, etc….oh and try a hike and hot springs hike! I want to do more backpacking/camping trips this summer and find some epically amazing spots in the PNW or wherever travel takes me. I don’t know how travel will be, but road trips to find some cool hiking spots might be in store!

6. Be more spontaneous and adventurous!

I’ve always been such a planner so this goal is to do some things on a whim…go somewhere new and exciting, travel some place I’ve never been, do some thing that scares me, start a new hobby, etc. This goal I chose to help me be more fearless and just to say yes!

7. Invest in the stock market → try a couple new stocks!

I’ve had the chance in 2020 to see the stock market roller coaster and learn about stocks more, which I never had time before to research. So for 2021 I want to dip my toes in a little more and invest a little in some stocks I see potential in.

8. Volunteer more and do more random acts of kindness

Helping people in need is one of the things I love doing most. Finding new ways to help the community through Rotary of Seattle, Robert Chinn Foundation, or Asian Hall of Fame are my goals for 2021. I love the idea of doing random acts of kindness through the year too — paying for someone’s groceries, holding doors open for people, lending a helping hand, giving friendly advice at a store, or being a listening ear for someone.

9. Reinvest in learning

This year I want to expand on learning and just be more curious about things. I never read books anymore so I want to try to read a book a month, which shouldn’t be too hard to accomplish! I want to go back to school in a sense with online free classes just to brush up on new skill sets and continue to learn what’s happening in the marketplace.

10. Be kind to myself — lots of self-care

This goal might be the biggest one of all. 2020 was a very tough year on everyone including myself. I need to make sure to check in, meditate, and make sure I’m in a good place. Find new ways to relax and be content all by myself.

These goals are just the foundation to what I think will be a great year. A great year of learning, self growth, more adventures, and happiness. Let’s see what I can check off and don’t worry I’ll check in and see what I’ve done in June! At the end of the day I’m grateful for all I have in this crazy life and I can’t wait to see what 2021 has in store!
